I have extensive background in belly dance
I've learned from the Gand dames of Belly dance:
Deann Adams, Katerina Burda, Najia Marlyz and Sharlyn Sawyer.
I have studied with many others too including most recently Luna, of Lunatique.
Mostly I'm just crazy in love with the dance and music.

The most fun I've ever had is getting together with other dancers (and sometimes musicians) to dance for the fun of it. I learn so much and it's very rewarding. Plus it's free to learn from each other.
Has anyone else any interest in getting together regularly to dance???
Maybe have tea, chocolate, wine, nibbles?
Swap music, technique, costuming tips?

I am a lifelong dancer who has overcome injury. I have taught. Most recently a year long charter school class with young girls 10-12.

Email me if it moves you and we can set something in motion.

I took a Great Workshop yesterday and was truly happy to see my girlfriends I even talked with another momma we talked kid / labor talk and what not but it gave us something to talk about and I smiled more at the hostess's little girl whom stared at my big belly quite often...... I have always been one whom needs to move in order to stay on the happy side of life and healthy of course. I truly believe movement while pregnant has helped keep my body runnin in as 'regular' a fashion as possible. Yoga has taught me how to breath while pregnant. Simply put I appreciate my womanly body while bellydancing and I am happier when I can dance....o.k... Your turn I would love to read all about bellydance an pregnancy for all of you!

Darbukistan Independence Days @ Spirit Haven

Friends,
I'd like to invite you to a very special music, dance and family event that is happening this June 5 - 7. Its called Darbukastani Independence Days (D.I.D.) and it is held at Spirit Haven Farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains. D.I.D. celebrates a contemporary approach to folk music and dance from around the world. It is one of my absolute favorite events! I think is the quality of the people, the stunning atmosphere and the non-stop music by stellar musicians that makes this festival special to me. There are music and dance classes all day and lots of live music through most of the night featuring Turkish, Central Asian, Balkan, Celtic and Appalachian music. Sometimes the Tuvan throat singers even show up!

D.I.D. is a truly eclectic environment for learning, sharing and playing. It is a family friendly camping event on a working farm with a 3 acre pond for fishing and swimming, and a small koi pond for gazing. Attendees are nestled in the mountains with wandering peacock, sheep, goats, chickens, whiperwills and there is always a natural firework display in the surrounding trees, thanks to the fireflies. I hope you can join us this year.

Here is a little more about what you will find on the farm:

Feb 3rd 2009 so yesterday I taught my last class this pregnancy, it was on my due date. Don't worry I was teaching my pre-natal class and it was awesome. I had 6 pregnant girls who had never belly danced before come to a class for the first time. It was so inspirational to teach and share my personal story of belly dancing. I danced all the way through my first pregnancy and into labor in the hospital and now planning to dance all the way through with this little bundle. Now hopefully I will have as easy and natural of a delivery as I did with the first one, even if this one is 10 days late as well.

With out belly dance and the inspiration of my amazing pre-natal belly dance instructor Stefanie Masters, I would be lacking a lot of strength, knowledge, and an internal calmness.

Belly Dance is and was an important part of both my pregnancies and deliveries. It helped me personally to get rid of carpal tunnel, pain from pinched nerve (sciatica), get rid of all my lower back pain, to understand my contractions, and helped me in labor and so much more.

May God bless all the pregnant belly dancers with wonderful pregnancies and easy labors (mine too please:) )

I have studied quite of bit of Pre-Natal Movement and yoga these last 8 months and fully believe there is a need for a class such as this to get pregnant women moving at a appropriate pace and movement ability of women whom are pregnant. I am not Yoga certified however I am hoping to enroll into a year long program this fall. I have BellyDanced for many years performing and teaching and feel fully fine with the BellyDance portion. As well I feel fully fine helping pregnant women and understanding movements that are beneficial for pregnancy, their child, breathing, bonding, back pain, swollen ankles, balance and movements that can help with labor.
I guess I am wondering is there anything specific you would like to see in a course such as this? Any special consideration or concern? Any input or ideas you have would be helpful. Thank you, Indigo

Whew. So I started teaching dance again last month, and I'm surprised to say that it wasn't quite the big release that I thought it would be. I used to love to teach, and thrive on it. It made me feel great to nurture my students, plan my classes, and put my energy into my lessons and explanations. Since I had the baby in June, I started teaching in September. And I was so excited. But once i started teaching, I couldn't believe how stressed it made me. I just feel drained after class, and planning classes feels stressful, not fun.

The only thing I can think it might be, is that when I teach, I pour so much of myself into it, and so much personal energy and passion. And right now, that part of me goes into my son. My husband. My home. And whatever's left over is for me.

Now when my students don't get it, I feel frustrated, and explaining it sometimes tires me instead of invigorates me.

I'm realizing that practicing dance is relaxing for me, but teaching hasn't been as enjoyable as it used to be. My classes are also much smaller, which is sometimes harder when you have two students instead of 15. With a larger class, you can always move forward if a few are struggling. But when your only 2 students are struggling, it can be a long long class.

I was worried about physically handling teaching dance, since I've been out of practice. It's the actual mental part that's more exhausting for me. And unfortunately, it's not the fun relaxing release I was hoping for.

My husband is suggesting I take a break from teaching, but I'm just not sure if that would make me happy or not. Anyone else have a similar situation?

wow. So my baby is two and a half months old. I've been getting back into working out and dancing, and I expected it to be difficult, that my body would be a little rusty and out of shape. That was a given. But my brain?

I got a new bellydance dvd, and the combos were just beyond me. Not for my body, but my brain. I just couldn't absorb what I was seeing, and remember what to do next. I found myself shutting it off, and sticking with drills and technique. And the other day, my family went to mini-golf, and my MIL asked me to add up the scores for her so she could run to the bathroom. I stared at the numbers and her notes, and went blank. I said sorry, I can't do it right now . It was also 8 pm and I was spent.

I know I heard that it's common to feel spacey and stupid after having a baby, but now I'm living it, and it's freaking me out. I have to start teaching dance next month, am I going to be able to have the concentration to do this and not look like a moron?

Am I going to get my brain back, or am I screwed until my son graduates high school?

I know that the hospital won't allow the metal captive ball hoops I normally wear, but do any of you know if the would allow stone, bone, wood, or glass plugs? Or do you think that I would be ok with removing the hoops and they wouldn't start shrinking back to normal size?

I'm just concerned because my ears are very finicky creatures and I really don't want to go through the stretching process again. I would assume that as long as they don't have any metal in them that the plugs would be acceptable, but I wanted to know if anyone else has encountered this.

I guess you're holding off bellydancing right now?" (paraphrased) who have been pretty stunned when I reply, "nope. Still teaching and dancing until it doesn't feel right any more."

I have then had several people ask me whether it's safe to shimmy or undulate when pregnant, even more who have insinuated that I must not get the fact that shimmying is "jarring" to the baby and could cause injury. This makes me so frustrated, as I've done all the research I need and have consulted my health care professionals and all of them say it's fine to continue dancing, so long as I'm not pushing myself past my comfort zone.

I just kind of hate the vibe I get off some people that pregnant ladies are like fragile little eggs that have to be handled carefully and protected from the world. I understand it's all out of true good vibes and concern, but I know I'm a tough cookie and am abiding by my body.

I'm 5 weeks pregnant with my second child (yipee!). I danced all through my first, with no issues. However, I am now much more involved and much more advanced than I was then. I belong to a progressive fusion bellydance company, which is pretty much what it sounds like. We fuse everything. Which means our dances tend to have a lot of hip-hop type locks in them, as well as deep knee bends, and modern / contemporary extensions. Several of our dances have berber walks within the choreography. So I guess here are my questions:

~ what type of twisty locky stuff is dangerous? Is it only hip stuff? Or do I need to worry about chest as well?

~ At what point do the joints start relaxing, so I need to be extra careful of over extension?

~ Is it okay to do quick dips from standing as long as my balance holds out?

~ what about spins? is it just a balance issue?

I am very good at listening to my body, but we weren't doing a lot of this stuff during my first pregnancy. We tend to dance fast, we dance hard, and we have a lot of layers (think arabic second transition with a pelvic undulation with a chest circle and a shoulder roll - and that's all at the same time in 4 counts!) I intend to ask my doctor, and to demonstrate the things I am concerned with, but at this point, she won't see me for another month, and I'm not sure I'm sticking with her anyway (based on my first birth with her).

We do have one move where we end up face down fully extended on the floor - my girls have already agreed to modify that one for me once my belly starts to pop out :)

Hi Bellydancing Mamas!

I am proud to announce the release of my prenatal bellydance performance video titled:

"Bellydance Baby! A Prenatal Bellydance Performance Video"

You can see a short 1:30 min. trailer on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4qnkVZa6nc

And order it for $20 from my website:
www.georgiabellydance.com

The Story
I recently had a baby boy (little Brett...so cute!) in January 2008. While I was pregnant, I did a lot of research into bellydancing and pregnancy and discovered that there are only 3 videos dedicated to this subject. Here they are:

Instructional:
Bellydancing During Pregnancy
www.visionarydance.com/Instru...egnancy
Made in Germany in the 1990's, this has a lot of great historical, medical and dance info. It includes several performances as well as a real-time class with four pregnant women to go over the moves.

Prenatal Bellydance
www.youtube.com/watch
Done by New York dancer Naia in 2006, this is a great, short gentle 30-minute prenatal bellydance workout.

Performance:
Dance to the Great Mother
www.visionarydance.com/Instru...html#GM
Done by Delilah in the mid-1980's, this is a beautiful performance video!

So, since the last performance one was done 20 years ago, I decided to film one too, particularly with some of the changes in tribal and the cool music from Solace and Raquy and the Cavement that has become very popular among bellydancers.

So after 9 months of planning, filming and post-production, here it is!

Please forward this to other bellydancers you know who might be interested or any other women who are pregnant, recently been pregnant or have self-esteem/body issues. I would hope they would find this inspiring.

I do offer wholesale pricing, so if you are a vendor interested in carrrying the video, please email me at kaleila@georgiabellydance.com!

Hi there hot mamas :)

I had a question about cup size fluctuation and weaning.

I went from a D cup to a DD cup with my second child.

So some of my "smaller D" costumes no longer fit, I can get into some of the full D costumes, they're just very "boobalicious", and the DD costumes fit perfectly.

My question is - based on your personal experiences, when I wean the baby eventually, are "the girls" going to go back to D, or am I going to stay a DD?

With my first child I didn't really notice much of a change, for some reason. I pretty much stayed a D cup the whole time with her, and after we weaned.

I was just curious what your experiences were. I don't have any firm plans to wean him anytime soon, but I am guessing with him being 16 months almost, that it will happen gradually and naturally over the next year.

I'm tentatively scheduled to perform for a charity event two weeks before my due date. I'm basically not going to know if I can do it up until the week of the event, most likely. Who knows if I'll deliver early, or how I will feel. That will be 38 weeks pregnant!

So I was wondering...anybody feel unable to perform that close to their due date? Anyone perform and regret performing? What's the most pregnant performance you had?

A while back I had posted a topic on the site asking if anyone you knew offered training on this subject. I am an intermediate level student-teacher. I am still taking class regularly, and I currently teach a beginner's level bellydance class for a start up project. I really want to start a class for pregnant women, and I am going to take the certificaton course about dancing through pregnancythis June, but I have some questions and I'm hoping you can help me with the answers:)

Some of these questions wil be blunt, b/c I would like to go into this eyes open.Ok, here goes:

1.What kind of liability will I be looking at? Are release forms sufficient?
2. Is there malpractice insurance that I can get, when there is no standard certification in the bellydance field? What would it be called?
3. Is there anyone on the east coast that specializes in bellydance during pregnancy specifically?
4. If so is there a training course?
5. Is anyone willing to coach me as I develop my own class structure?
6. Should I be taking other pre and post natal courses like lamaze to support this potential work?
7. Any works of advice or things I should consider?

Any information will help. Thanks ladies!
Sincerely,
Candace

Just wanted to stay relaxed above all else so I could stay healthy and prepare in comfort according to me. I recently arranged a local workshop and that worked out well 4 me and my family, even w/ a show that night. [someone else coordinated the show]. I still don't see me doing out of town workshops again any time soon [except the occasional semi local one]- I'm still preferring to devote that energy to my son and the rest o' the fam so we are a relaxed happy bunch. I'm performing locally/semi locally to have fun and stay connected. I taught a beginner series semi recently to keep people interested. however, I'm interested in getting a general idea of when people started accepting invitations to travel and teach after having a baby. I know it is going to be individual, that everyone is different and has their own reasons, but I'm curious as to whether there is a trend or average baby age that works well. My son will be one this month and I don't see him happily playing while Mama teaches for a few hours.

No, I'm not selling anything. I just fell in love with Otopia today, and I thought some of you bellydancin mamas would like it too.

Since I've been pregnant, I've been using up the rest of a previous Christmas present (Bath and Body Works True Blue Spa Lay it on Thick Shea Butter) on my belly to help prevent stretch marks. I never used this lotion much, because honestly, I don't really care for the smell of pure shea butter. The bonus to it is that its thick consistency is great and it makes my skin feel dewy and moist the entire day. The downside is that I can smell it on all my clothes, and I get tired of smelling like it. Plus my husband doesn't like it either, so he calls me "coco-loco" when he smells it. Which by the way, is the name of a tropical drink we had in Punta Cana, and you drink it out of a real coconut, and yes, umbrellas. I don't care for cocoa butter for the same reason. I get tired of smelling like the tropics. Especially in winter. It just doesn't work.

By the way, since I"ve been pregnant, I've been rambling way worse than my normal amount. I apologize.

So what else do you use to prevent stretch marks? I went to the motherhood store to try Burt's Bees Mama Bee Belly Butter, which of course has shea butter AND cocoa butter, but I figured it might smell less tropical. Anyway. I found Otopia instead. Wow. It was an unexpected splurge, and I highly recommend it.

It's a completely organic line from Australia and fairly new. I read the ingredients, and was hooked on the fragrances listed. The price is a little hefty, about 19 bucks a product, but I figured why not.
I got the Bump to Bub Pre and Post Natal Stretch Mark Oil. This is a massage oil that you smooth over your belly after you shower. It has a great variety of oils (jojoba, sweet almond, rose hip, sunflower, calendula, and wheat germ), combined with essential oils ( mandarin, tangerine, jasmine and frankincense). I tried it this morning, and it feels awesome when you rub it in, it's a great belly massage for your stretching belly. It's a light oil, but it takes a few minutes to absorb completely.
I also got the Yummy Mummy Pre and Post Natal Body Cream. This feels awesome too, it's smooth and creamy, and you can feel your skin just drink it in. Among olive oil, aloe, and primrose oil, it has rosewood, bergamot, neroli and jasmine essential oils.

Both are lightly scented and not overpowering, but it's so much more pleasant than shea butter (if you don't like it that is) and I felt so spoiled using it. Definitely worth your money if you are looking for something different. In addition to being certified organic, its also biodegradable and non-animal tested.

I looked up their website to see what else they offer, and I admit their website kind of sucks. I got more information from reading the back of the bottles, and the worst part, you can't order from the website! But anyway, here it is. They also have breast cream for new moms and some baby care products too.
www.otopiaorganics.com/p1.asp

Here is the page with the products I got:
www.otopiaorganics.com/p9.asp

If you have a baby shower to go to, this would be a nice gift for the mom to be, if you can find it that is. Try asking maternity stores, they might have it or can order it for you most likely.

I have done some research on what to do and what not do during pregnancy. However, most of the advice seems to relate to once you are actually showing - 2nd & 3rd trimester. Any advice on the first trimester? I read that you should not shimmy during pregnancy. Shimming is something that I have to practice or I seem to lose the natural feel, so I am a bit worried about not shimmying for that long.....I know that the first three months is a very vulnerable period of time despite the fact that hardly anyone would notice I am pregnant. I have had three children before but I did not belly dance back then....(it has been eight years!!)

Lately I've been wondering, if I want to perform, what the heck will I wear? If a performance gig falls in my lap, I'm worried nothing will fit and I won't have time to make anything.

I'm sure some things will fit (harem pants and elastic), and some may not. I've been thinking of making a ghawazee coat that is adjustable so that I can wear that now, later, and when I return to regular clothing.

What types of costuming obstacles have all you mamas had while being pregnant? I want to be prepared! Any advice?

He start sleeping through the night when he was about 2 1/2 months old and the at 4 1/2 months old stopped. Currently I do not let him cry for very long. I give in and feed him and he eats like a horse. I keep telling myself to let him cry longer but at 2 am that's hard. I have two little hurdles about letting him cry longer. 1) He currently sleeps in mine and my hubby's room. 2) I have a 3 1/2 year old and I don't want to wake her up. I plan to move him to her room once he sleeps better (we only have two bedrooms upstairs). I just keep second guessing myself about letting him cry, feeding him or moving him or just not worrying about it so much. Anyone with any suggestions.

There is a huge myth out there that states that women have been successfully giving birth for thousands of years, seemingly from the dawn of creation, without medical help or pain control. That is NOT true. That is one of the biggest loads of crap ever hoisted upon women. It goes hand in hand with the "Women were meant to suffer during child birth" explanation of original sin. If you have some kind of dogmatic religious belief that states that you NEED to be in pain when having your babies that is respectable and just fine with me but for everyone who does not subscribe to a dogma of guilt I would like you to realize that you have been tricked as well.

In the Urban Classical Mediterranean world it was extremely common for birthing women to use Opium to control the pain of their contractions. Rural women used methods of trance via controlled music. Was the use of Opium safe? Definately not. But did it alleviate the pain! I'm pretty sure it did. I don't know how long our human ancestors have been medicating themselves for pain but we are the exact same people now that we we're 20,000 years ago. Same body type, same brain capacity, same appearances. If anything... we're a little less sharp than our predicessors within the last 20,000 years. They had the means to control pain, believe me.

Now lets fast forward to the present. We have safer technology for pain control during child birth. Hospitals can make you literally as comfortable as you want to be. Everything that can be done will be done to protect you and your baby... Why do so many women feel pressured into birth plans that feature the latest rage in drugless pain control? (Psssst... its cheaper! In 2001 Natural births ran a little over $2,000 USD whereas the medicated, doctor assisted births ran at about $10,000 USD)

I want you to know that I am one of the biggest advocates of trance birth, I've done massive amounts of research on rhythmic birthing technique both traditional and practical. I respect a woman who can make an educated decision but I cannot let myself just stand by while I see women being bullied by fear and propaganda into making one decision or another. I say always go with what you're comfortable with. Don't deny yourself pain relief for the wrong reasons.

So I'm 33 weeks and thinking ahead to my delivery and I think I want to have music playing in the room. Some good mix of mellow, some drum solo type, stuff that will make me want to maybe move or shimmy - because so far doing some moves like shimmies and egyptian walks/ see saws is really helping low back pain.

So did you use music during your labor? Did it help? What kind of music helped? I'm thinking for me if it's all mellow/ 'new agey' it will drive me crazy, but a good mix would distract me and keep me focused at the same time. (Does this make sence?) I know I'll be putting on a few of Light Rain's tracks...

Any suggestions are welcome!

Hi-
So I'm newly pregnant, 9 weeks along. I'm noticing a lot of strong stretching in my pelvic floor, and my sides, to the point that it is painful. I asked my doctors about it, and they said as long as the pain isn't persistent and climbs to excruciating, or is accompanied with spotting, that it is OK. I've had a few sonograms and they are keeping a close watch on me, and so far everything looks good. Basically, I have a few days where I feel on and off cramps, and then a few days of nothing, followed by a realization that those particular jeans don't fit anymore.

I wrapped up teaching my 8 week bellydance session and have put teaching on hold for the moment, until I can decide if I should continue or not. I might just wait until after the baby arrives, I'm not sure just yet. I've been resting often and trying to take it easy when I feel crampy, and that seems to help a lot. When I"m really crampy, getting out of a chair or walking is pretty uncomfortable or even painful. So dancing is sort of on the back burner right now, just in case.

One of my friends suggested that maybe since I bellydance, that my abdominal muscles are stronger/tighter than some, and therefore really stretching out. I also got diagnosed with a heart-shaped uterus, so I wonder if that has something to do with it as well.

Any other bellydancers out there get this sort of cramping while pregnant?

Phweeeew, I'm so glad I have a place to come to...where I don't feel like a freak!!!!

K....I need some advice!!!

Up until just a few days ago...I have been reall really sick.....working out...let alone bellydancing has just been an impossiblity. In the beginning of my pregnancy I got hired for two 3 hour workshops with a performance for each. Even though I was sick, I was told it would only be the first trimester, I figured I would be fine by then....& thought it would be way fun to dance pregnant.
Now it has been 6 months of inactivity...coming from 2-4 hours of dancing and/or yoga a day, 4-6 times a week....with 1 - 2 performances almost weekly. Now I can barely lean back...or my upper abs feel like they are tearing & my stamina...is...welll.... I huff n puff everytime I climb the stairs.
These gigs are in about 3 weeks & I'm stressin'!
Usually my workshops/classes are very challenging with a large basis in yoga/pilates & /..well....just a lot of work!!! I enjoyed going about things in that way because I found that students loved a workout to build stamina/strength/and fluidity in their moves...while pumping up their endorphines.......creating a happy feeling after the workshop.

Should I go about teaching the workshops like a yoga instructor...lead more with a demo & then explain...followed by walking around making sure everybody's getting it.......versus doing everything with them??????

Any three week fixes for low stamina & tight/weak muscles????

I spoke to my doctor yesterday and she had no experience with HypnoBirthing, but she said that her experience with the Bradley Method was not good. She said that it was very restrictive and that her patients signed a contract saying that they would not take any drugs during their birth.
That seems very pushy to me. While I would prefer a natural birth I don't want to feel guilty for asking for an epidural if the pain is too intense.
What are your experiences with the two methods and what do you think works better....any pros and cons or advice would be helpful.

He's gonna be up soon and hungry and I'm dreading it. It's been like this for two days now and doesn't seem like it's doing anything. It doesn't look infected and it doesn't look like it's getting better. Should I give him formula for left side feedings until it's better? I'd rather not, but I'd rather not drag this out either.

I'd be particularly interested to hear if any particular movements helped with labour!

My midwife said that would be great prep for labour though?? The lift won't be working for 4 months, so I guess it'll keep me fit. I just hope I don't end up with too many stitches or a caesarian!!

I'm new to this tribe and I've really enjoyed some of the discussions here.

All the best to you all

What did you think of it? The poll about it on Shira.net was very favorable; but no review or detailed info. I'm interested in getting it, but am curious about other folks' thoughts.

During the first one, I did a deep bodywave (as deep as I dared - not a layback) and after the performance, a woman said she saw the baby kick during that move. I wish I had that on video!!
