Hey Ladies,
I've got a little problem with extra skin and stretch marks. I've dropped all my baby weight but I wanted to know what the deal is with the extra skin thing. Does that go away with time or should I go get a tummy tuck? What? It's almost been a year how long should I give it?(2 more weeks and it will have been a year) Also are there any products I can use to help the process along? I already drink plenty of water and do the coco butter thing so any advice beyond that would be great.
Thankies,
~*Gen*~

Re: Belly Trouble
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 5:35 AMI don't know... if you find the solution let me know! I'm thinking after I'm done having kids that I might want a tummy tuck.... and a boob lift. Poor things are so sad since I've been nursing.

Re: Belly Trouble
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 1:04 PMThe "pooch" depends on a lot of things, most of them beyond your control ;). Age and the skin's natural elasticity are the biggest ones. I know some people who preferred not to loose ALL the baby-weight, because having a litle more weight on filled out that loose skin a little better.
After a year you are probably CLOSE to "as good as it's going to get" (or at least that was my experience, though I had my kids very young; it might take a little longer if you're a little older). I probably wouldn't do anything drastic (like a tummy-tuck) for a couple of years at least, though, and not until after I was SURE I was done having kids. Personally I probably wouldn't do a tummy-tuck at all, having been brought up in a rather hippy-dippy, love-your-body-as-it-is kind of a mindset ;), and bellydancing is about as forgiving of these little flaws (or badges) we all have as any dance-form I can think of... but you will need to decide what's right for you.
Wish I could be a little more helpful...on the plus-side, the extra skin shimmies very nicely! -

Re: Belly Trouble
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 2:11 PMThe one thing I can recommend is lots and lots of water! Nothing hydrates the skin and improves elasticity like water. I agree with Taran, don't do anything drastic like a tummy tuck just yet. Give it some more time. That's quite invasive surgery and would most likely affect your belly dancing.....gasp! -

Re: Belly Trouble
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 4:44 PMOne other thing just occurred to me... it seems like you're concerned about the surficial appearance of the skin rather than the muscle tone underneath, but I just thought I'd throw this in... I had a distinct separation in my abdominals after my first kid... I kept waiting for it to go away before I really worked on toning them up, and it never did (I had three years between my babies). Finally after second baby was born I started doing my crunches again, and the separation closed up within a month. I was kinda kicking myself for waiting so long. Anyway, I mention this just in case underlyng muscle tone is an issue... working on your abs could help somewhat, though it probably won't affect loose skin and stretch marks much. -

Re: Belly Trouble
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 6:45 AMActually it's just the skin and the stretchmarks that are the problem. The muscle underneath is in really good shape. I'm trim and toned, looking really great. If I stand tall and kind of stretch backwards a little my belly looks great but I can't bend forward at all because the saggy skin gathers around the middle and it looks terrible. I have little if any belly fat, just too much skin. :-P I'm going to go in for a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon and see what he recommends. I know that I don't need a full tummy tuck because I would rather not have the muscles messed with at all and I don't need any fat removed because theres not much to remove! Besides I like a little bit of fat on the belly so that I don't look like a teen age boy. :-P The skin thing is all that concerns me.
I've seen some tattooing done over light to medium stretch marks on the belly and it actually looked really good. I might consider that if I wanted tattoos at all but I'm not a tattoo kind of person... more of a henna girl. I'm definately done having kids. I have two and if we ever have more they're not coming from me! I understand that theres a stretch mark product recently out that is the only product to produce actual results for stretch marks. I have unfortunately forgotten the name and there are too many out there who make the same claims that I can't find it again. Even if I cover or fix the stretch marks I still need to do something about the excess skin. I've been drinking oodles of water and doing the vitamin thing regularly. Though I look pretty good... I think this is as good as I can get naturally. :-(

Re: Belly Trouble
Sat, January 26, 2008 - 3:58 PMI'm here with ya....debating on the whole 'should I or shouldn't I get a tuck?' It's a tough one, though entirely personal, and if you are truly done having babies I say go for it if you want your belly to be as close to prebaby condtion as possible. However on the other side, you might be surprised to find that it will slowly snap back, like my mom's did. Her tummy is in amazing shape (she's fifty five) and she had three kids, the last one being a nine pounder! I guess she has great skin genes, I'm just waiting for mine to kick in and my youngest is four. Anyhoo, just be informed about potential nerve damage, recovery time, etc. if you get the tuck. In the interim firming lotions might help or there's always the good old Sugarpetals tummy cover. Good luck sweetie! -

Re: Belly Trouble
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 6:38 AMI have to disagree with the 1 year stance- it took 2.5 years to get my skin "tone" back, but it did recover significantly (Even I won't say completely!)
Checking the muscle tone and drinking lots of water will help, probably a lot of the general 'healthy skin' tips would help too (getting your omega 3's and vitamin E, etc.) -

Re: Belly Trouble
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 3:38 AMI don't think it'll go away, mine hasn't and it's been 7 years! I have finally accepted it now, I went through the shall I go for a tummy tuck phase but heard so many horror stories I bottled! I've found bellydance bodystockings to give me a bit more confidence though. See ebay shop- stores.ebay.co.uk/SHIFTING-...E-BOUTIQUE they hold it in and a give the appearance of tight flawless skin. You need to get in there and smooth the loose skin out as you put it on but once you have they hold it all in place. Makes you feel really good. When I discovered these it was the first time I had been able to get my tummy out in public since I first got pregnant nearly 8 years ago!

Re: Belly Trouble
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 9:45 AMA year was my experience, but this is probably age related, too (I was quite young when I had my kids)... I'm 27 now and actually feeling like my tummy's looking worse now than it did a year after last baby, just because my skin is starting to show its age a little more (I get folds in my face from sleeping I never used to, things like that ;) )
