stretchy cramps

Hi-
So I'm newly pregnant, 9 weeks along. I'm noticing a lot of strong stretching in my pelvic floor, and my sides, to the point that it is painful. I asked my doctors about it, and they said as long as the pain isn't persistent and climbs to excruciating, or is accompanied with spotting, that it is OK. I've had a few sonograms and they are keeping a close watch on me, and so far everything looks good. Basically, I have a few days where I feel on and off cramps, and then a few days of nothing, followed by a realization that those particular jeans don't fit anymore.

I wrapped up teaching my 8 week bellydance session and have put teaching on hold for the moment, until I can decide if I should continue or not. I might just wait until after the baby arrives, I'm not sure just yet. I've been resting often and trying to take it easy when I feel crampy, and that seems to help a lot. When I"m really crampy, getting out of a chair or walking is pretty uncomfortable or even painful. So dancing is sort of on the back burner right now, just in case.

One of my friends suggested that maybe since I bellydance, that my abdominal muscles are stronger/tighter than some, and therefore really stretching out. I also got diagnosed with a heart-shaped uterus, so I wonder if that has something to do with it as well.

Any other bellydancers out there get this sort of cramping while pregnant?

I too have had those pains, and they were just the stretching of those ligaments. There were times when the pain was more intense and I would be concerned, but usually I would find it was signaling a big growth spurt in my belly. I have felt there is a connection between bellydancing and more stretching pain. I have a friend who just had her third baby (the first one since starting bellydance) and she experienced more of the ligament stretching pain this last time around.

    Good luck!

my ligament pain has been far worse this second time around than it was the first. I am now 29 weeks and still teaching dance. I encourage you to continue, and just adjust your movement for your changing body. It will actually help the ligaments stretch nicely, and that part of mamahood is just painful no matter what.

    Yep. Round ligament pain sucks.

And yes, by all means keep dancing if you can. I am 32 weeks and performed this past weekend. I just listen to my body - I don't have the stamina I normally do, but I take lots of breaks (and drink lots of water).

Thanks, I looked up round ligament pain, and that's exactly what I'm feeling. I'm noticing if I just rest and take it easy, it's tolerable. I also noticed that getting out of a chair too quickly, like if the phone's ringing, usually makes me double over. So basically I just have to sloooooowwww down. People probably think I'm screening my phone calls, because the answering machine gets the phone before me usually!
I don't intend on quitting dancing, but I'm not sure what amount/level of teaching I want to continue with just yet. My sessions don't start up again until after the holiday anyway, and by then I"ll be well into the second trimester and hopefully feeling more up to it. Lately, it's been a relief not having class, it allows me more time to relax after work and put my feet up. If I want to dance, I can do it when I feel up to it, for the amount of time I feel like, without being at the mercy of a schedule.

Wendi is right - and the other comments too - it's normal.
I'm 17 weeks and get them too. I actually feel better when I've made the effort to practice as it fights off the fatigue feelings!
          Good luck
