As a fresh starting Doula, I was wondering if any of you used bellydance moves during your labor.
Bellyrolls???
I would presume doing bellyrolls during labor would massage and relax the uterus as thus aiding in relaxation followed by a quiker dilation and a less painfull labor.
Is that at all physically possible?
I am a bellydancer but I started dancing after my last child was born, so I am familiar with the terms and executions of certain moves.
So please tell me what or which movements if you used any at all were beneficial to you during labor?
It will be another tool to use in the birthing room to ease and relax my mothers.
Thank you for any input you can give me.

Re: Labor and bellydance
Thu, January 22, 2009 - 10:37 PMommis can help with lower back pain- undulations mimic the natural progression of the muscles during labor, but i wouldn't want to do that any more than I was naturally doing- opportunities for rest were of greater benefit. Undulations are good prep before hand, tho. another movement that is often naturally engaged is a 'thigh driven' shimmy, but again, this is more likely something spontaneously engaged rather than something you can suggest trying. Sometimes just offering a 'pulse' for rhythmic swaying or walking can help. I definitely had some slow dance music in my bag- Farzad Farhangi's Sandstorm CD was great for this
