Anyone have a Labor Music Mix or Song Lists they want to share?

So I'm 33 weeks and thinking ahead to my delivery and I think I want to have music playing in the room. Some good mix of mellow, some drum solo type, stuff that will make me want to maybe move or shimmy - because so far doing some moves like shimmies and egyptian walks/ see saws is really helping low back pain.

So did you use music during your labor? Did it help? What kind of music helped? I'm thinking for me if it's all mellow/ 'new agey' it will drive me crazy, but a good mix would distract me and keep me focused at the same time. (Does this make sence?) I know I'll be putting on a few of Light Rain's tracks...

Any suggestions are welcome!

  • You know, I really really loved music at my second labor. The first one- no way!! Not at all. But the second time I was really grooving. I suggest things that make you want to dance... and things that make you feel all romantic & mushy... things that make you feel sexy... seriously. It's good stuff. Way better than enya over and over and over. I busted out with fun stuff like... ok... i confess... george michael's father figure was totally on my birthing soundtrack... hahaaaaa!
  • Whatever you choose, I recommend at least half an hour's worth of relaxing music. Use that music *now* for meditation/relaxation exercises. If you precondition your brain to relax when that music comes on, you will find yourself relaxing automatically when you hear it during labor. not BD music, but I like George Winston's Summer CD.
  • I had a LOT of Vas. I didn't get tired of it.
    • I'm in my second trimester with my first, so I'm not speaking from experience (yet), but I'm planning on lots of Gabrielle Roth. Her Bones album in particular. Soooo relaxing. And hypnotic.
      • I made about four different long mixes, and went through them all. I liked songs that were definitely soothing, but not too sweet and Enya-esque. I remember really liking the Norah Jones albums, and and some of Holly Cole's songs--she has a really rich alto voice that I loved.

Interestingly, for the end, when I really needed to focus on dilating those last couple of centimeters so I could get that girl OUT, I wanted something kind of trippy, but with a beat. I remember telling my poor husband, "No, not that one--not that one," until he finally got the mix I wanted. I remember Massive Attack's "Teardrop" feeling like just the right song at that point, also 10,000 Maniacs' "Circle Dream" from Our Time In Eden. Funny, I can't remember what song my daughter finally emerged to--maybe we finally had the music off then!

        Happy birthing!

        • I had music for both my babies, but when it came to pushing, you are in that tunnel and probably won't hear anything else. Whatever song moves your soul. I liked Dead Can Dance, Sheila Chandra, Yunchen Llamo, Bob Marley , whatever puts you in a great mood. Annie Lennox, and yep I threw in lots of BD music. Of course my labor went on awhile so fortunately I had plenty of music for backup.
